Alright, let me see a show of hands of those of you willing to work on a farm for $5/hour. Really? No one wants to do that? But I thought unemployed Americans would be clamoring for a job like that?

First, we would need all cities to improve their mass transit options (and commuter behaviors!) before a national railway network could be a reality. When I'm in Europe though, I prefer travelling by train.

If America had more liberal vacation-time policies (like, for example, German full-time workers who get 5 weeks of paid time off per year) then I could see this happening. I've really enjoyed the times I drove between the West Coast to the Midwest.

It's too bad they don't handle US to Europe routes. I really miss the convenience of flying Southwest. They're one of the most competitive airlines because their corporate culture is very pro-customer.

Sure, air travel is a "luxury", but if I want to visit family and friends overseas then I don't really have alternatives, do I? Or if my company decides to send me overseas for an assignment, how do you suppose I get there?

Atlas -- If you want to talk welfare clause, then how much government money is given to the airline industry each year? Wouldn't you call that government welfare? Guess what, corporate welfare is still welfare, a handout is a handout no matter who the recipient is! Check out the Air Transportation …

I'm not sure that imposing high tariffs on Chinese imports is a great idea while the China are -- how shall I put this -- holding our purse strings? And for such tariffs to be effective, they'd have to be unusually high.

It is good to keep in mind that hope and optimism are two completely separate entities: optimism is more like "positive thinking" while hope actually incorporates goal setting and preparedness. "Hope for the best, plan for the worst" is I think what b.dune was getting to.

Vacations should be about taking a break and relaxing -- not babysitting in a foreign setting. Americans get so little vacation already...
